Parts of a Book
Learning Objectives
By the end of this lesson, pupils will be able to:
- Recognize the parts of a book.
- Name each part correctly.
- Practice proper eye movement when reading—from left to right, top to bottom, and return sweep.
What is a Book?
A book is something we read to learn new things or enjoy stories.
Books can have words, pictures, or both.
Every book has different parts that help us find information and understand what we are reading.
Parts of a Book
Let’s learn about the important parts of a book and what each one does!
1. Front Cover
- The front cover is the first thing you see when you pick up a book.
- It shows the title of the book, the author’s name, and sometimes the illustrator’s name.
- The cover often has a picture that gives you an idea about the story or topic.
Example:
If the title is “The Happy Cat,” the front cover might have a picture of a smiling cat.
2. Back Cover
- The back cover is found at the back of the book.
- It sometimes tells a short summary or blurb about the story.
- It can also show reviews, a barcode, or other books by the same author.
The back cover might say:
“The Happy Cat loves to play and make new friends. Read this story to find out what makes him smile!”
3. Title Page
- When you open the book, the first page you see is the title page.
- It tells the title of the book, the author, and the illustrator again.
- It may also show the publisher’s name.
Example:
The Happy Cat
Written by: Anna Lee
Illustrated by: Ben Cruz
Published by: Sunny Books
4. Table of Contents
- The Table of Contents is like a map of the book.
- It lists the chapters or sections and tells you the page number where each one starts.
- This part helps you find information quickly.
Example:
| Chapter | Title | Page |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | The Cat Wakes Up | 1 |
| 2 | The Cat Goes Out | 5 |
| 3 | The Cat’s New Friend | 10 |
5. Pages
- The pages are the sheets inside the book where the story or information is written.
- Each page is usually numbered.
- We turn the pages carefully when reading.
Example:
If you’re reading page 5, you might find the part where The Happy Cat goes outside to play.
6. Spine
- The spine is the side part of the book that holds all the pages together.
- When books are on a shelf, we can see the title and author’s name on the spine.
Example:
On the bookshelf, you might read the spine that says:
The Happy Cat – Anna Lee

Proper Eye Movement When Reading
When we read, we move our eyes in a special way.
This helps us read the words in the correct order.
- Start from left to right.
🡒 Example: The cat runs fast. - Move down to the next line after finishing a sentence.
- Continue reading top to bottom of the page.
- When you reach the end of a line, make a return sweep — move your eyes back to the left side to start a new line.
