The Rectangle – Grade 1 Math
The Rectangle – Grade 1 Math
What is a Rectangle?
A rectangle is one of the most common shapes we see every day. It is part of basic geometry taught in Grade 1 math.
A rectangle has:
- Four sides
- Four corners
- All corners are square corners
- The opposite sides are equal in length
That’s what makes a rectangle different from other shapes like circles or triangles.
Let’s Look at a Rectangle
👉 A side is a straight line that makes the border of the shape.
👉 A corner is the point where two sides meet.

When we count the sides, we get: 1, 2, 3, 4.
When we count the corners, we also get: 1, 2, 3, 4.
So, every rectangle has 4 sides and 4 square corners.
Examples of Rectangles
Rectangles are everywhere around us. Here are some examples your child can spot easily:

Each of these objects is shaped like a rectangle because it has four sides and four square corners.
Key Rectangle Facts to Remember
✔ A rectangle has 4 sides.
✔ A rectangle has 4 square corners.
✔ The opposite sides of a rectangle are the same length.
Try This Activity
Look around your classroom, house, or neighborhood.
Can you spot objects shaped like rectangles?
When you find one, point to it and say: “This is a rectangle!”
This simple activity helps children connect the math concept of rectangles to the real world.

Why This Matters
Learning about rectangles is the first step into geometry for Grade 1 students. By understanding shapes, children improve their visual recognition, problem-solving, and math foundation skills.
